In a powerful memoir, identity theft expert Betz-Hamilton tells the shocking and unsettling story of her family, betrayal, and deceit. Convinced that the thief had to be someone they knew, Axton and her parents completely cut off the outside world, isolating themselves from friends and family
Small-town Indiana in the early '90s. Betz-Hamilton's parents both had their identities stolen; their credit ratings were ruined. The family changed all of their personal information and moved to different addresses, but the identity thief followed them wherever they went. Convinced that the thief had to be someone they knew, her parents isolated themselves from friends and family. Betz-Hamilton spent her formative years crippled by anxiety; her mother became paranoid, consumed by how others perceived the family. Herself a victim of the identity thief, her credit ruined, Betz-Hamilton vowed to find the thief who broke the unwritten rules of love, protection, and family. -- adapted from jacket

Definitely a debut book. The overall story is okay but I was frustrated for the first 3/4 of the book because the author was absolutely clueless about who had stolen her identity. It was absolutely ridiculous. I stuck with the story because I wanted to see at what point the author finally got it, but dang, it was tedious getting there. I did find the ending of the story about what the family member had been doing all those years much more fascinating. I agree with the other commenter who said that this book was oversold.

This is a personal story of discovering her mother's mental health issues.

Story was vastly over-sold by reviewers. Definitely a debut, could have used an editor, clearly written with thesaurus in hand. How often do real people use the word "reticently"?

This reminded me of the time I said hi to my dad and he replied "Who are you?" Classic dad given the fact that I may not have a father despite all the evidence I have collected over the years that proves he's real. Sure everyone else has told me I have wasted my life trying to prove to the world once and for all that fathers exist but I feel that there is a deeper meaning to their constant critique of my life choices. I may not be the bravest man in the world but when it comes to the scientific theory I have courage where it counts.
