My favorite book I’ve read so far this year. High school senior Jack Ellison and his best friend of many years, Jillian, are visiting the college they will attend next year. Jack sits on some pee-stained stairs pining for her and envying his other best friend, Franny, who also happens to be dating her. “Excuse me, man, but you’re sort of damming up the steps.” And there the story truly begins. And begins again. And begins again. The source of that voice is Kate. And Jack’s life will never be the same with her now in it. This tale of friendship, romance, family, grief, making things right, and yes, time travel (!) will keep you turning pages. It’s not very often I read a YA book whose protagonist has such a supportive family and positive outlook on life without it seeming unauthentic or cheesy (although believe me, there is plenty of “cheese” in this book). And on top of that, it’s an #ownvoices book.

All the heart eyes for this book, which is a love story, and a sad story, and a story with an unusual plot structure (a la Groundhog Day). Super-romantic, and funny, and diverse (#ownvoices). Loved it.

Only I'm learning that sometimes it's not what you say that matters most. Or not even what you *don't* say. Those things are cool, helpful even. But it's about doing. Do something. Do anything. Do what you can and then when it feels like you've done all you could, do more.

"There's a beaver-colony-level gnawing happening in my stomach that I can't shake. It's as though my stomach is made of the most tender *whatever wood that beavers love most*. The choicest wood that male beavers send to the female beavers of their affection. And these beavers are going to town in my stomach, because they haven't seen this amount of sweet-ass lumber in a long time and they are taking full advantage of this new haul before it disappears." I think that's the best description of anxiety I have ever heard in my life! And if you don't fall in love with Justin A. Reynolds because of the rest of his writing, this quote just might do it.
