Like most kids, Katie was a picky eater. She'd sit at the table in silent protest, hide uneaten toast in her bedroom, listen to parental threats she'd have to eat it for breakfast. But in any life, a set of circumstances can collide, and normal behavior can soon shade into something sinister, something deadly.Lighter Than My Shadow is a hand-drawn story of struggle and recovery, a trip into the black heart of a taboo illness, an exposure of those who are so weak they prey on the weak, and an inspiration to anybody who believes in the human power to endure, and to eventually find happiness

Keeping with the theme of graphic novels like "Fun Home" and "Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant", this chronicles a woman's lifetime eating disorder - from anorexia to bulimia. Sad in some parts, happy in others, you'll find yourself really rooting for her and hoping she'll get better.

Lighter Than My Shadow tackles the complexity of eating disorders, which are often brushed off based on a superficial understanding. It shows that eating disorders aren't just about one's appearance, but also control, compulsion and a myriad of other factors. It also addresses the vulnerability that people with eating disorders experience that leaves them prey to abuse. The author demonstrates the power of art when navigating trauma.

The graphic novel Lighter Than My Shadow follows the author Katie Green with her struggles with anorexia and self-esteem issues from childhood to adulthood. She was sexually assaulted by her alternative therapist. On her rode to recovery Katie used art as a creative outlet to help cope with her struggles with her self-esteem issues. She created this graphic novel to help others going through similar issues and know they are not alone. This book has over 508 pages. It took me about 40 minutes to read. This book I related to on a personal level. I don’t suffer from anorexia or have experienced sexual assault that Katie had. I do struggle from very bad self-esteem issues as most people experience so I could relate with points in Katie's life. This graphic novel showed the struggles with figuring out a problem that can cause the lost of her life and her rode to recovery which was not that easy. This novel had cartoon nudity which may not be suitable for a younger reader.

My rating for this graphic novel is 5/5. @Sheridan of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

Incredibly well-done, this is the hard-hitting tale of the author’s experience with and recovery from body issues, eating disorders, and abuse.

This is one of my favorite accidental reads. I picked it up not knowing what to expect and loved it. The art is stylized but it gets the point across, which is to tell the story of Katie, who grew up like any other kid but who ended up developing more than one eating disorder because of society's perception of beauty, was sexually abused by someone she trusted, had anxiety, and that almost succumbed to her suicidal tendencies after so much trauma. It does end in on a hopeful and realistic note that while these events never go away, they don't have to dominate our lives with a positive support system

Okay drawings and dialogue, but dark. Little self awareness or insight. Glossy pages and gray background make type hard to read. Too long.

The book was beautiful, heartbreaking, and hopeful, a graphic novel worth reading. I will note that it deals very frankly with issues of eating disorders and sexual abuse so if this is something that you find challenging it is something you will need to take into consideration in deciding to read this graphic novel.

The author, a young woman artist, candidly documents her personal struggles with a mental illness related to obsession, self-control, body image, and food. It's tragic and hopeful in equal measures.

This is a very personal account of a young woman who has struggled with an eating disorder her whole life. It was very interesting to see the evolution of her life and progress with her eating disorder. I found it heavy but still easy enough to get through. Worth reading whether you have known someone with an eating disorder, struggled with one yourself or are just wanting an insider perspective on what someone with an eating disorder may go through.

Katie Green presents an honest personal account of her lifelong battle with an eating disorder. Some images are disturbing and the content is heavy, but I think this is a must read for older teens and adults who have ever experienced issues with addiction, sexual abuse, mental illness, or would like to gain an immersed view of this perspective. The illustrations are powerfully drawn and really bring the story to life.

Frightening or Intense Scenes: The art work is not especially explicit but there is some nudity and it can be intense at times due to the nature of eating disorders and abuse.
