Well-made biopic, and the casting was pretty perfect - some of the actors were surprising. For instance, I had never seen America Ferrera in a real drama (Traveling Pants doesn't count), and she did a good job. What doesn't make sense is that many of his strikes - which took place in different eras - were lumped together.

Unfortunately, this type of bio-pic is not new. However, knowing that the historical Cesar Chavez was a good man who did bring focus on the undocumented worker's work conditions, made the movie somewhat compelling. Its a good story, that has been done before (Mandela, Ghandi), but it is told poorly, almost to the point of boredom here: i.e. Chavez' famous hunger strike is never fully explained or is it indicated why it ended. Interesting how they lumped Reagan & Nixon together as the common enemy, when in reality, they were politically far apart. America Ferrara and John Malkovich are good in their roles and the lead, Michael Pena, is adequate.

Good biopic about a heroic cause, a determined leader, and a difficult fight.
(Perhaps slightly idealized, and soapy domesticly.)

I rated this above average mainly due to the story of Mr. Chavez. The acting was average, and the story a bit idealized/Hollywood, but it remains a compelling tale of how those who actually put our food on the table are treated, and fighting for some justice for them. That was an very powerful tale. While they won the battle they lost the war based on how workers are treated even today (better but still not fair- people want $.69 a pound tomatoes and they don't care if they are picked by slave labor or not). Mr. Chavez made people care, at least for a little while. While probably an idealized portrait, he seems like we was a good man fighting for justice.
