This film handles the issues of racism gently and carefully. It’s not so much about the television series Roots as it is about the relationship between two women, one white and one black, who nurture their friendship as they negotiate the racism in their small town in pursuit of their dreams. Maggie Grace stands out with her performance as the meek but talented Violet. And it’s always great to see Cicely Tyson.
