These short stories, discovered only recently, highlight Collins's masterfully blend of the personal issues-- race, gender, family, and sexuality-- with the ordinary moments that shape our lives. Also known as an artist and filmmaker, her stories create full-bodied men, women, and children who justify their lives while integrating the African American experience without becoming symbols or token images

Kathleen Collins was a filmmaker and activist during the struggle for civil rights. Her stories, written in the 1960s and 1970s, went unpublished for decades. Although the collection is a little uneven and some stories are more like ideas for films, overall I found them to be interesting and fresh. Some stories are very good.

The short stories in this collection seem more akin to poems than novels; each is built deftly on a single idea, and author Collins make masterful use of repetition to convey her character's thoughts and disappointments. Many describe black bohemian life in the 1960s, or explore the interior lives of the northern black bourgeoisie, who grapple with internalized colorism and the changing mores of the civil rights era. The collection is extremely varied, but "The Happy Family" is the one that stayed with me longest.

She is getting a lot of attention right now. This collection is much more adventurous than I expected - that's good.
This is good. The attention seems deserved- I will be recommending this to friends.

An absolutely masterful collection of short stories - the title story is the clear standout, but there isn't a weak link in the bunch. I made myself read this over the course of several days so that I could better savor its beauty.
