One of the strangest movies I've ever seen - and I'm okay with that!

Going into this film, I didn't truly know what to expect. All I knew was that the promotional images really captured my attention, due to the pretty colors, with up-and-coming actress, Elle Fanning in the center. It's some kind of horror (I read the sex/nudity descriptions in the parental guidance section on IMDb prior to viewing) that has very mixed reviews.

Much of the the first two acts are relatively slow and realistic. It's got great visuals, despite two scenes with annoying flashing lights. The trip-hop soundtrack by Cliff Martinez is also ear-catching. But, boy, was I not expecting that final act! Turns out there's a decent amount of foreshadowing leading up to it. As the track titled, "Are We Having a Party" played over, my eyes were widened as I realized what had happened to Jesse (Fanning). In spite of its disturbing aspects (notably, a scene involving necrophilia), I ended up really liking The Neon Demon. I appreciate how it chose to make audiences uncomfortable rather than the usual "lesbianism is hot~" excuse (see: Birdman). There are critics who hate and/or have called this misogynistic, and I can completely understand why; but that doesn't wane my enjoyment of it.

On the official movie discussion on Reddit, users have called this "David Lynch meets Black Swan," which I also happen to agree with.

It was great to see Abbey Kershaw on-screen again after her debut in Mad Max: Fury Road - also kind of funny her playing an aspiring model, considering she already works as one in real-life; can't wait to see what else she and Fanning have to offer in the future!

Learning that the director, Nicholas Refn, was born colorblind is very surprising, since his movies are so awashed with vivid colors.

Slow-paced and pretentious, I was hoping for a turn for the better in the story line but it never came. A disappointing watch.

A horrendous experience of a teen (runaway?) from a small town Georgia to pursue a modeling career in LA’s cut throat modeling world populated with “predators”. A curious watch is all. As others had pointed up, highly stylish cinematography and sound that lived up to the glitzy modeling world but not too convincing in the horror department. For a true Model story, suggest "The Cara (Delevingne) Project 2017."

I liked it, better than some least I watched it all the way, many I don't.

This film had some interesting scenes, and some intriguing characters. The incredible power of beauty in our society can have some pretty ugly consequences. That being said, it's not very enjoyable to watch.

Not too great. It started out pretty good but three quarters of the way through it did not seem to make any sense.

This is a terrible movie, and not like "terror" based either, it's just bad. The guy Refn thinks of himself as a 16 year old girl in the movie industry and decided to make a movie about it. However, as a work of interpretation and music, it's absolutely fantastic. Rich in symbolic imagery, and plentiful rich music tones provide a good context for the story. It's an artsy-fartsy type movie. I really liked some speeches in this movie, but the director needs to go.

Poor, sad waste of time. I didn't even realize this is suppose to be a "horror" movie, it's just so bad.

I think Refn would make a great DP. I do not think he is a very good director. He's ok. This is a contrived, bloody excuse for people to watch pretty people consume each other. It's a little too on the nose. There are better satires that delve into the subject of the obscene drive for youth that lasts forever.
Neon Demon is far too in love with it's own ideas to really amount to much. It's too simple. These young women latch onto the newcomer who is getting all the attention, which of course drives them insane with jealousy. *Eye roll* That's fine. Cliched, but ok. Refn does nothing worth watching for the entire 2 hours. There's no acknowledgement of the patriarchy's part in pitting women against each other - that would have made this much more interesting.
If you want to watch an unusual horror film, check out Under the Skin if you haven't seen it already. It's far more interesting than this.

I feel like I have to come to this film's rescue. It's a visceral, raw take on the fashion and fame industry, shattering the ideals of what is considered perfection. If you're going into this one thinking it's a jump scare horror flick, you'll be sorely disappointed. This is much more a "get under your skin and stay there" kind of movie. To me, this had legitimately creepy and unnerving moments, partnered with a stunning soundtrack, something that comes along with Nicolas Refn movies. If you thought his previous film Drive was paced too slow, you'll probably feel the same way about this one.

Most of the interesting quotes are in IMDb:

Here are a few more about the teen model not in IMDb yet:

When did you graduate from high school?
-I'm actually still kind of working on it.
I need a parental consent form. ... Just one signature there for parental consent. One little signature and we're off. When someone asks, I want you to say you are 19. Always 19. Eighteen is too on the nose. No one's going to believe that.
In Georgia, the sky is also this big. Makes being a person down on earth feel really small.
Oh, don't worry, honey. That whole deer-in-the-headlights thing is exactly what they want.
