Swedish master Ingmar Bergman penned this loving tribute to his parent's epic romance. In 1909, poor, idealistic theology student Henrik Bergman falls in love with Anna ¿kerbloom, the intelligent, educated daughter of a rich family in Uppsala. After their wedding Henrik becomes a priest in the north of Sweden. Urbane Anna can't stand living in the rural county and grows increasingly restless. She returns to Uppsala and the couple's love and commitment are put to the test

As others have mentioned, this movie was quite lengthy. Given it was cobbled together from a TV series and compressed here, it makes sense. I did turn it off and watched over two days. I was actually surprised I liked this as I'm not overly fond of this director. But the characters were real, personable and a bit nuts to simply dive into their feelings as they do. At times, you want to give both main characters a good shake, and Henrik is portrayed as a stubborn, stubborn man set in his ways and determined to sacrifice everything to some strange ideal he has established for himself. Worth watching.

I feel that investing in this paid off. At a certain point I began to wonder how long it would go on; I hadn't noticed it runs three hours. These three hours represent a fraction of the material that comes from the televion series. Even so, it seemed a necessary length. In one sense, its a bit escapist, taking us to a time and place probably unfamiliar. But the trials of young love and marriage is something widely familiar; here the fascination involves coping with class differences. Knowing that the road to hell is paved with good intentions, it might not be clear where best intentions take us. The wonder is the feeling that the script has been understanding of and sensitive to the humanity of these people who were who they were and did what they did probably 4 or 5 years before Mr. Bergman had the means to understand them at all.

This is a great, touching movie written by Ingmar Bergman about his parents. It's a long movie but it has to be otherwise it would have fallen into the trap of being overly simplified. It doesn't feel long. The audience is along for the journey of these two people as they meet, get married, have kids. The writing is great and the acting is great and the relationship feels AUTHENTIC.

This is quite the masterpiece. The actors are wonderful, the story very dramatic and interesting. I recommended this to anybody who appreciates quality.

The movie is 3 hours in length, so plan ahead :) The husband comes across as arrogant and vengeful.

A magnificent Swedish TV miniseries based on the early years of his parents marriage. Loved both actors.

Ingmar Bergman, one of the three greatest film directors of the twentieth century, scripted this film after he had quit directing films. Unlike his other films, this is a story from real life (the story being the courtship(s?) and early marriage of Bergman’s parents), which makes it extremely difficult to predict what is going to happen next. Sometimes real life can lead to a greater story than the best of fiction. This film won the Cannes Palme d’Or, meaning that in Europe’s opinion, it was the best film of the year. While this version was 182 minutes duration, there is actually a European TV version that is six hour duration.
