This movie has nothing to do with the 1973 original film, The Day of the Jackal, or the Frederick Forsyth novel. Some viewers would quibble with the accents created by the actors. But this movie is highly entertaining. IMHO, I would rate "The Jackal" at 3.50 stars.

This is a highly mediocre and annoying movie compared to "The Day of the Jackal". The only reason to watch it is for Richard Gere's masterly, if incredibly badly scripted, performance. Sidney Poitier's performance is sadly pathetic --- he is well past his prime and poorly directed. Bruce Willis' performance is shallow and forgettable. He was miscast into a role not suited for him. The worst part is the plot, which is loaded with occasional continuity problems and also incredulous twists, turns, and decisions that defy rational explanation and that require continuous "suspensions of reality".

Really bad, really pointless semi-remake of the 1973 film "The Day of the Jackal." Willis is comatose as the assassin, Richard Gere can't pull off an Irish accent, and I just felt bad for Sydney Poitier. Released in 1997.

Bruce Willis absolutely scared the hell out of me in this story. He has no emotion, no feeling. I doubt he even has blood in his veins. He is 1000% cold, cool, calculating, lethal. He is a monster. He might as well have scales under his skin and yet he's calm, professional, dignified and even courteous. That's his act. That's how he makes you think that he's human, but he's not.
The only thing scarier than Bruce Willis in this is the idea that there may be people like this in real life. Pray you never cross their path.
