In my opinion, an interesting tale, folk lore really, with some beautiful dance numbers. Old time Hollywood at its best for the 1950s. The sweetness and light is nicely balanced with the dark events of the village's past and of the comments of Van Johnson, in his role of cynical sidekick to the always rosy visioned Gene Kelly. Cyd lives up to her famous dancing nickname, "beautiful dynamite."
Suspend your disbelief, sit back and enjoy.

Takes a bit of patience (it's almost two hours long), but
I rather enjoyed this 1954 Scottish romantic musical fantasy. Van Johnson's voice/kind of negative vibe was particularly entertaining (for me).

Also good dancing (including Scottish circle dancing), stage production, etc.

Oh dear. This film has not aged well. Vincente Minnelli must have phoned in the direction: the village costumes are laughable, the painted backdrops look very low-budget, and the "Scottish" accents are all over the map. There are few memorable songs, and worst of all given the presence of Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse, not enough dancing. Watch "An American in Paris", "On the Town", or "Singin' in the Rain" instead.

I liked this movie very much. It is very different from other Gene Kelly movies, which is nice. It takes place in a small town in Scotland. The movie has great musical numbers and a great storyline with an interesting twist.
