I had mixed feelings about this book. I’m not a huge fan of the characters. None of them are particularly likeable; no one’s funny or nice. Everyone was just angry all the time. Kenna, the MC, definitely falls into the YA heroine archetype. She’s strong-willed, stubborn, snarky, doesn’t like authority, proud, wants to prove a point—but it goes over-the-top. She makes a big deal over things that shouldn’t be a problem. She’s definitely big on the whole “just because I don’t have powers doesn’t mean I’m powerless” thing, which got repetitive. The romantic sub-plot was cliche and dramatic (and this from someone who gobbles up YA). There is a lot of unnecessary cussing.
However, all problems with the characters aside, the plot was interesting enough to keep me going. I had thought about stopping near the beginning because of the characters, but I’m actually glad I pushed through it because the plot was engaging and fast-paced. I couldn’t put it down because there wasn’t really a good stopping point; it went from one attempted heist to the next. The basic theme is corny (the heroes aren’t all good, the villains aren’t all bad). It was definitely goal-driven. I’m interested in reading the sequel to find out the resolution to the plot even though the characters leave me wishing for more.
