A young soldier on a pass in New York City finds entertainment and romance when he visits the famed Stage Door Canteen, where famous stars host servicemen during the war. The sensational cast includes Katherine Hepburn, Helen Hayes, Gracie Fields, Edgar Bergen, Charlie McCarthy, Harpo Marx, Gypsy Rose Lee, Ethel Merman, and the always outrageous Tallulah Bankhead. The rollicking comedy directed by two-time Oscar winner Frank Borzage also features great music from some of the top band leaders of the day including Benny Goodman, Count Basie, and Xavier Cugat!

GREAT 1943 b&w 135 minute film - part of American entertainment (stage, screen and radio) support for US participation in WWII.
I can appreciate why it's part of Critics' Choice classic movie collection. I hadn't heard of it before, but I am VERY glad I watched it. It does have an almost comic book quick page turning shift in context and flavor. Lots of cameos by singers/dancers/actors, etc. and it does celebrate American diversity and even briefly acknowledges Chinese and Russian WWII participation, too.
The 135 minutes covers a lot of ground and features many 40's stars I couldn't recognize. Glad I used wikipedia's excellent article to find out things like the identity of the attractive short woman appearing in several sequences (Southern charmer Margaret Early) and lots more.
