Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series is a gripping and masterfully crafted saga. Many of the characters are good and become reluctant heroes in the face of strong villains. Issues of politics, allegiances, alliances, and diplomacy that seem very human are played out in a fantasy world featuring sentient species that are near-human and not-so-near human. There are strong echoes of ancient Roman civilization, but modified to fit with a world containing magical elemental companions. I have read and enjoyed immensely the whole series and am now, several years later, enjoying the audiobooks. "Academ's Fury" is the second, following "Furies of Calderon"; the third in the series is "Cursor's Fury." There are seven titles in the series, so there's lots of good reading if you enjoy this genre.
