This short film, based upon a 1963 Ernest Gaines short story, portrays the life of African-American sharecroppers in Louisiana. We get a very subtle portrait of segregation and discrimination via a back of the bus scene, a Confederate Flag, and a colored only business. But on the human level, we learn about hard work, courage, self-respect, and gratefulness for being respected. One section of the DVD includes Henry Fonda commenting on the fact that Gaines wrote the short story base upon his early life.
