A Canadian suspense film about a missing daughter, THE CAPTIVE jumps between the disappearance and the state of things eight years later, spanning the whole investigation. The police force are truly inept and watching them fumble for the first hour is downright depressing. The villains are moustache-twirling calibre of evil, which is absurd and unrealistic. Finally, after an hour, things start to kick into high gear -- easily the best part of the film -- when the fed-up father decides to take matters into his own hands. Overall, THE CAPTIVE isn't a bad film, but, due to its unevenness, I wouldn't recommend it.

Probably the worst movie of all time. Disjointed timeline, ridiculously implausible story consisting of disconnected random events inexplicably strung together, nondescript characters, pathetic acting, writing and directing; this production has the worst of everything. A complete waste of time...

Very strange movie. I don't understand the long wait for this movie. It really is not very good.

Given how varied the comments are, apparently this is a movie you will either hate or love. You will hate it if you expect a typical Hollywood production where the story is unambiguous and you know from the get-go what it's about and where it is going. You will love it if you liked Family Viewing and Next of Kin, his earliest features. I like the fact that it takes a while to figure out what is going on and who is who. The director knows exactly what he is doing and you can trust him to take you along for the ride, but you have to be willing to do it his way. To me the 2 hours seemed short. When Ergoyan is writing his own script, as in this case, he is as brilliant a director as they come. I think it is one of his best in years.

A movie about pedophiles, a ring of them, stalking kids on line. I don't know whether it's realistic or not in their capabilities, but the anguish of the parents and the futility of the cops seemed real enough.

Farfetched and unrealistically brazen pedophile ringleader, but the story held my interest.

There is nothing new to this story. I have seen similar or even better scripts in shows like “Law & Order SVU” or “Criminal Minds”.

Sadly, a typical Egoyan movie. Like the director, this movie tries to be something it's not. A decent enough story (if one ignores the plot holes and implausibilities), but it seems almost like a novel length story, written as a short story, then filmed as a 2 hour feature length film. Honestly...nothing to see here.

This is not an easy movie. It is EXTREMELY difficult to understand at the beginning as it switches back and forth in time and space - the flashbacks are really confusing. Hang in there, as it is worth it. The acting is BRILLIANT - Mika is creepy enough to literally make your skin crawl and Ryan Reynolds will make you cry, he is such a wonderful dad. On the downside, it makes the police look like, well, idiot, incompetent jerks whom you learn to HATE. And the ending happens far too quickly for the pace of the rest of the film for the watcher to buy it completely. Overall though, give it your time; be patient through the bad beginning and the character studies will reward you.
