Then you find something, something you should not have found.' Irrepressible Biddy Leigh, under-cook at the foreboding Mawton Hall, only wants to marry her childhood sweetheart and set up her own tavern. But when her elderly master marries the young Lady Carinna, Biddy is unwittingly swept up in a world of scheming, secrets, and lies. Five stars! Enjoyable summer reading, love the characters and how they interact with each other--Biddy remains strong and true to herself. The plot takes a comical turn mid-way through the book. The author has taken a fresh approach in this great historical novel from several servants' perspectives.

A really enjoyable historical fiction read. The main character Biddy is appealing and her experiences in situations which are not her doing make for compelling reading.

I really enjoyed this historical fiction novel about life of a poor worker in the house of wealth. It was hard for me to put down.

A serviceable page-turner. I was hoping for an elegant read; this isn't.
