It follows the story of Mark Landis, one of the most prolific art forgers in U.S. history. His impressive body of work spans thirty years, covering a wide range of painting styles and periods. While the copies could fetch impressive sums on the open market, Landis isn't in it for money. Posing as a philanthropic donor, Landis has given away hundreds of works over the years to a staggering list of institutions across the United States

Mark Landis is constantly asked two questions: why does he do what he does? Why does he not make original art in his own name? Art and Craft has the answers, and you probably want to discover them for yourself. But if you want my opinion (spoilerish comments follow), Landis is tweaking the noses of greedy snobs in the art world, who don't even "do their due diligence." It must be especially sweet to do this, since these same people dismiss him as a wealthy simpleton -- he is obviously affected by schizophrenia and the medication he must take for it. In fact, he talks as well as draws a very smooth line and knows within an inch what he can get away with. In short, the con is not just an adjunct to his art, it IS his art. Haven't the snobs ever heard of performance art?

We highly enjoyed this look at the clash of the art world and a man whose only joy is painting and giving them away. Yes, he's a forger, he's probably prefer copyist. He's not asking for money, he's lonely and this help him connect to the world. It was very sweet and this movie seems to have given him the gift of friendship among the art world. I highly recommend it.

Really this was quite boring. I, personally don't think that it is really helpful to feed this man's psychotic behavior by focusing on making him famous. There is no contribution to society in this. Maybe if you were American, since they always seem to want to make heroes out of antiheroes. As Canadians we have many heroes that we don't even bother to exalt. One of the many differences between us.

An intimate look at the eccentric (crazy if you prefer) Landis and his copying process. I was floored at how he used reproductions as a basis for his forgeries and I particularly like the idea that he was found out by a person almost as crazy, if not more socially acceptable, as he is. This film never addresses the elephant in the room of how so many museums displayed his work as authentic and the challenge to art at its core. If he hadn't been institutionalized and had done everything as performance art, he would have been hailed as an artistic genius.

Amazing! Absolutely amazing! I can't believe I never heard of Landis before.
