Second full-length album from hat-wearing, gap-toothed mellow troubadour Mac "Mac D" DeMarco. I know the kids dig him, but he's, like, almost too mellow. It's super easy to listen, but also super easy to just chill to the point of ignoring the music. I can imagine him as a beach bum living in a tiny boat house or something. He's been compared to Jonathan Richman and he has some of the same goofy innocence, but even Richman had some edge. Again, I'll leave him for the kids, along with Grimes, DIIV, and chillwave.

I first heard of Mac while searching the Scene magazine for some interesting bands to buy tickets to see at Beachland and/or The Grog Shop. After I chose the ones I knew (7 or 8), I decided to find out who Demarco was. In reading about him and listening to a few cuts on youtube, I decided to check him out. His live performance was very good except for the sound system problems they had. Someone told me later than he had his own sound people with him and if so, they surely didn't know how to use Beachland's equipment. But even so, what I heard was promising.

I liked what I heard on this album, although I'd stick to calling it alternative rock rather than "jangle pop". I mean, some of the guitar work, I guess, could fit that since even REM is often put in that category. My favorite song on the album is "Treat Her Better" with "Salad Days", "Brother", "Let Her Go", "Goodbye Weekend", and "Jonny's Odyssey".

I'd love to here him live again with a better sound.
