This is a typical futuristic adventure and a popcorn movie. It's been done before many times.

It's fun at times but ultimately forgettable. The storytelling feels rushed like they tried to pack too much story into too little movie. It never quite reaches the potential that the neat setting, cool creatures, interesting ships, and unique world-building offers. Those details are where all the creativity went. The plot goes pretty much as you expect it to and is relatively boring and never quite captures what they seem to have been going for. The dialogue is not good either. Basically as a movie it amounts to attractive people doing a little swashbuckling and then the movie ends.

This movie, from the director of Wall-E, wants to be Star Wars or Conan The Barbarian. It wants to be a rollicking epic space opera/sword and sandals tale on another world. The movie doesn't succeed, although it does manage to be an enjoyably average film.

The film's weaknesses are threefold. First, none of the protagonists are interesting or sympathetic except the Green Martian Chief played by Willem Dafoe- who is a supporting character who easily steals every scene he's in. The good guys are good because they're good, and the bad guys are bad because they're bad. The characterization is so broad and arch and uninteresting that they seem caricatures of caricatures. Second Taylor Kitsch can't act. Period. Sorry, harsh truth, moving on. Third, the movie feels incredibly rushed- trying to fit too much world building into what should be a tight action tale. It's a fun movie, but is littered with the bones of the much better movie it could have been.

I was entertained and I liked the movie. And I think Taylor Kitsch was a good choice for a lead character.

The story line was thin, but the special effects was very good. Keep in mind that this was written 100 years ago by Edgar Rice Burroughs the creator of Tarzan, and was the front runner of the Sci-fi generation. With that in mind I can enjoy the movie for what it represents; the birth of science fiction. I feel that the negative comments come jaded viewers who have seen and heard it all before.

Good movie for the kids or for a rainy day.

It has elements of Stargate. Story line could have been better.
