Third generation Texas Ranger Tyler Steele is the last of a dying breed -- a modern day cowboy hero living in a world that doesn't quite understand his powerful sense of right and wrong. Despite his strong moral compass, Ty has a terrible weakness. His hard outer shell -- the one essential to his work -- made him incapable of forging the emotional connection his wife Andie so desperately needed. Now retired, raising their son Brodie on his own, and at risk of losing his ranch, Ty does not know how to rebuild from the rubble of his life. The answer comes in the form of Samantha and her daughter Hope, on the run from a seemingly inescapable situation. They are in danger, desperate, and alone. Though they are strangers, Ty knows he can help -- protecting the innocent is what he does best. As his relationship with Sam and Hope unfolds, Ty realizes he must confront his true weaknesses if he wants to become the man he needs to be

Very well written and enjoyed the story a lot. I have read several Charles Martin novels and am always surprised at the depth and variety he puts into his stories. This book was actually quite "light" on the religious overtones usually found in his pages but you are well aware that God is forefront in both Martin's and the main character of the story.

I did not enjoy this book at all and found myself skipping several paragraphs to get to the point. It was an obvious ending. I thought it weird that "Mama Ella" continued to speak to them (Tucker and Mutt) as a voice after her death, but Mutt is the insane one? I really enjoyed The Mountain Between Us and thought I had found another author, who's work I could enjoy. But I'll pass.

An interesting book, but not the usual type I read. Personally, I wish he had left out the swear words. Also, while being faithful in marriage was extolled by the behavior of the main character, the descriptions of a few sensual scenes detracted from the message. This is not a book I would recommend to those looking for a *clean* read.

This author was recommended to me and I chose this particular book as my first read because of the cowboy/Ranger character. I enjoyed the story so much I immediately reread it. Loved main character's sense of right/wrong and how that colors his world black and white and
controls his actions. Being a Texas Ranger creates havoc in his personal life, but he can't change what he is inside.

This is my third book by Charles Martin that I've read consecutively. I wouldn't recommend reading all of his books at once as your initial enjoyment of your first read will be a bit tainted. The problem is that he has very similar male characters every time and, after reading about the character for the third time, they start coming off as very cheesy. I'd recommend his books but limit yourself to one. Chasing Fireflies was the best.

Texas Ranger, Tyler Steele, is doing his best to raise his son single handed and be good at his job. His life is turned around when he encounters a mother and her daughter running away from an abuser. Charles Martin writes from the heart. His male characters have depth, understanding and are not afraid to show their feelings and grow from their experiences. A must read, as are all of the author's books.
