Upbeat and interesting tale, based in fact, about an underdog: a Catholic university's women's basketball team. Set in the days just as women's sports and career + family paths were taking firm hold (the 70s, as Title IX was born). The pathbreaking female coach does a good job of portraying the challenges/instilling confidence in her young girls without becoming melodramatic. There's a funny scene where she asks her team to dive for the ball, and one girl promptly quits---scrapping for the ball "is not ladylike!" Ellen Burstyn does a great job as the doubting Mother Superior who gradually becomes a believer and encourages the nuns to become the cheering squad. The director shows the ripple effects by following up with the girls' achievements: many went into coaching/continued sports. "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

Hokey. Cheesy. Predictable. But, it was a great movie to encourage little girls to pursue sports.

Rated 6/10. I initially missed the fact about this movie that it was based on a true story. I thought otherwise that it was going to be just another cliche formulatic sports story, with a few bits of comedy thrown in. Now having seen it, all-in-all I would rate this a bit above average as to the way it was portrayed. I think viewers who really like sports stories would find this a better movie than I did.

Finally -- a half decent girls sports movie. A little cheesy and predictable but I can think of worse ways to pass away 90 minutes.

Fantastic movie! I am a teacher and I totally recommend this film. I loved every minute of it and the interviews in the Special Features let the real people comment on what they were up against. Very inspiring! G-rated.
No inappropriate sex, violence, bad language. Funny and endearing. Best movie since "The Trouble with Angels." Plus it is a true story. I am going to watch it again tonight.

Loved it and so did the grandchildren... even the boys.

The "message" here was confusing. Women were working in the 70's (and 60's and '50's, etc.) and she was up against her old female coach, so there was no precedent there. She could afford to "coach for free" because she was being supported by her husband. She had no children apparently so why wouldn't she have a job? She had a "win at all costs" mentality and that never changed- moreover, she was bitchy and borderline sadistic. What lesson was learned here? What if they had come in 2nd place, no movie? The voiceover at the end seemed to try to justify that women need women to remind women that women can succeed. Well, they were playing other girl-teams with a female coach so...? OK, so let's exercise in a drainage tunnel? Dress as a nun to save airflight $$? Could she have done it if she had kids and no financial support? Her (female) ex-coach was right, she probably WASn't a team player. Yay, the heroine won but did she LEARN anything? What was the message here? The whole thing seemed contrived even if it was based on a true story. What made this a "christian" film, the nuns? Huh? What?

My kids and I loved it! Too bad it did not make money in the box office...
