Very interesting approach to a new understanding of the character Charlie Chan, created by mystery writer Earl Derr Biggers. Who was the real life Charlie Chan? Where did Derr Biggers get the idea for his character? What was life on Hawaii like for the real detective (Chang Apana)? What issues of racism and colonialism are part of this story? The author is an American of Chinese heritage, he is an insightful writer and one who uncovers many avenues connected to the full story of Charlie Chan.
