Carved from a hundred million pounds of stone, soaring effortlessly atop a spiderweb of masonry, Gothic cathedrals are marvels of human achievement and artistry. But how did medieval builders reach such spectacular heights? Consuming the labor of entire towns, sometimes taking a hundred years to build, these architectural marvels were crafted from just hand tools and stone. Many now teeter on the brink of catastrophic collapse

Interesting NOVA doc on cathedrals explores the history and the engineering challenges of building these massive monuments of faith. Some of the hazards facing certain vulnerable buildings are explored, as are theories about the design process. Recommended to anyone with an interest in architecture or religious history.

Build to Last - stunning architecture to be discovered

One of the best NOVA programmes I've seen over the years--and I've been watching NOVA since '77 . . . it deviates a little from the usual formula--it skips the tiresome artificial crisis (such as: 'we've got to build a pretend roman bath in ten days because we have to fly home!!!') that is a feature of too many NOVA shows, and focuses on the architectural/engineering achievements of these remarkable buildings.

This documentary makes a lot of noise with music and images, taking forever to get to anything interesting, repeats it a hundred times, then fizzles out with some speculation on biblical principles.
Waste of time.
