Interesting Teen fantasy focused on the magic of the theatre, especially of Shakespeare plays. Teenager Beatrice Shakespeare Smith (“Bertie”) lives in the Theatre Illuminata -- a magic theatre held together by a magic book. With her reside the actual characters from all of the plays ever written, dominated by those of Shakespeare. Bertie, abandoned at the theatre as a child, and a handful of others are the only “real” people there, calling the characters to life when a play needs to be performed. But Bertie wants to know who her parents were. Some of the characters, especially the charismatic and devious Ariel (from *The Tempest*), want to break away from the limits of the plays and experience reality. All of this puts the magic of the theatre at risk of collapse.

This is a very creative novel, with a theatre twist different than any other fantasy I have read. First of a series.

Truely enjoyable. The full cast really made it come to life. I love the way the characters came to life. The following books in the series carry out the story very well.
