VERY GOOD 1960 MGM film of successful 1956 Broadway production: 'Love and Lunacy; Gangsters and Gowns' (from the trailer).
The plot/writing is a bit weak so the film isn't GREAT, but the high quality of all the other production aspects (staging, singing, dancing, whacky telephone answering service humor, etc.) made it quite enjoyable for me - glad I watched it.
Judy Holliday REALLY fills the screen - especially in all those glam gowns. Fun to see Jean (Edith Bunker) Stapleton in her earlier amusing side role.
Italian Dean Martin (Crocetti was his actual family name) does a good job as he tries something a bit different after the end of his lengthy comedy duo act with Jerry Lewis. Apparently ending was a bit unhappy for them and they didn't make up for a couple decades.

This movie musical is perfect for a rainy afternoon or evening. Pop in a bag of microwave popcorn and enjoy. If you're recovering from a cold and are staying in for the weekend or are simply determined to veg, pick up these DVDs and have fun. Here is my viewing list for a wasted weekend Veg-Fest: Bells are Ringing w/Dean Martin and Judy Holliday, The Court Jester w/Danny Kaye, Anything Goes w/ Ethel Merman and Frank Sinatra, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court w/Bing Crosby, Guys and Dolls w/Frank Sinatra. Go Veg and Chill. Jeff G.

Painfully unfunny, One might have expected more from Comden & Green than tired schtick that was already outmoded by 1960. Dreadful jokes, lame choreography -- is there anything worse than old pros who obviously are NOT having a good time??? This tawdry, prolonged insult of a movie is a waste of both Judy Holliday and the uninhabited Dean Martin. Supporting cast fares no better. Contempt for humanity doubles as "humor," and, again, quite predictably, FAILS. There isn't a laugh or a smile anywhere in this toxic mess. Minnelli's "direction," needless to add, sucks.
