When a successful Hollywood writer-director is placed on trial for a woman's murder, attorney Joseph Antonelli takes the case, which the defendant believes is tied to his new script, a script that recalls elements of "Citizen Kane."

Star Witness is about a man on trial for murder - a man recognized as one of the film industry's most successful writer-directors, a man of mythic drive and talent, and someone who looks more guilty with every passing witness. Attorney Joseph Antonelli - suave, philosophical, fearless, and cagey - takes up the director's defense for the murder of an equally famous young woman. Then the defendant shows Antonelli the script he has been working on for years, a script he considers his masterpiece: the story of a man's rags-to-riches climb to the top that recalls Orson Welles's Citizen Kane, and that includes a visionary film director as its hero. In this fascinating story-within-a-story, the accused reveals his version of the tragedy, the secrets of his relationship with the deceased, and the ominous events that led to her death. In it we see how art can imitate life - and unmask a killer even the court can't find.

In this fifth book in the Joseph Antonelli series, the lawyer is asked to represent a famous movie director from Hollywood, accused of the murder of his famous wife, an actress. I am not a fan of anything Hollywood, so thought I'd have difficulty getting through this story. I was pleasantly surprised, again, by Buffa's ability to hook me in to the story almost immediately. We are never sure, throughout the book, if the character, Stanley Roth is guilty of the murder. This is yet another book that is difficult to put down once you have begun to read it. Excellent book! I have the next one, "Breach of Trust" on hold and can't wait to read it. I love this author, and I especially love the character, Joseph Antonelli!

At least as entertaining as The Brass Verdict by Michael Connelly, which is almost a rip-off of this book. Buffa's came first. The plot lines differ but the characters are almost identical: high-profile criminal defense attorney, powerful Hollywood producer, movie stars, and the basic crime set-up - murder of the producer's glamorous wife resulting in him being accused and refusing to cooperate with his attorney - are near clones. This one goes into the lifestyle and mindset of the characters more, and is not so plot driven.
