Recent ghost sightings in the Blacklin County jail and local cemetary are a cause for concern for sherriff Dan Rhodes and when the leader of a crusade to save the cemetary is murdered, the sherriff's concern becomes action.

McMillan Palgrave
In this tenth installment of the Sheriff Dan Rhodes series, the Blacklin County Texas law enforcer is back to solve even more mysteries. Some of the most amusing sequences in Crider's Blacklin county mysteries are set in the jailhouse, and star the ongoing word battles between its two septuagarian denizens, Hack the dispatcher and Lawton, the jailer. This time no one at the jailhouse is laughing and Rhodes has a new problem. Not only is the jailhouse itself rumored to be haunted, but a mysterious corpse is found in an open grave in the neighboring town. Rhodes uses his laid back sleuthing skills to find the answers to these puzzling events, which Crider depicts with his usual humor, suspense and small town ambience.

The prisoners in the county jail are raising the complaint that the jail itself is haunted, and they are backed up in this supernatural frenzy by a group of teenagers who burst into the jail screaming that they've seen ghosts in the local cemetery.
It's true that there has been vandalism and robbery at the cemetery, and gravestones and memorial statues are being stolen. But are these ghosts really ghosts? And is there a connection between the two sets of manifestations? All of this becomes a trivial concern when the body of Ty Berry, the leader of the crusade to save the cemetery, is discovered in an open grave. There's almost no evidence; Rhodes is thrown back on his own cunning to solve the murder and exorcise the ghosts.
