There's something rotten in the small town of Pickax--at least to the sensitive noses of newspaperman Jim Qwilleran and his Siamese cats Koko and Yum Yum. An accident has claimed the life of the local paper's eccentric publisher, but to Qwilleran and his feline friends it smells like murder. They soon sniff out a shocking secret, but Koko's snooping into an unusual edition of Shakespeare may prove CATastrophic...because somewhere in Pickax a lady loves not wisely but too well, a widow is scandalously merry, and a stranger has a lean and hungry look. The stage is set for Qwilleran, Koko, Yum Yum, and the second act of murder most meow...

Baker & Taylor
Qwilleran and his feline friends believe that the accidental death of a local publisher is actually murder, but an amorous lady, a strangely merry widow, and a desperate stranger may stop them from ever learning the truth

Fun reading, very entertaining as were the prior books. BUT... I found it quite silly a hunter explaining how to get good deer meat by letting the animal bleed until the heart stopped beating. This is silly because all animals die when the heart stops beating; hunters do not control how long the heart beats. The heart might have stopped, but it does not mean the blood is all gone! Talk about anti-hunting prose! I hope the next books don’t go deeper into more bashing propaganda—either smoking or hunting or eating… It would be a pity.

Braun must have run out of inspiration, for this book isn't as good as some of her others. There are several murders and two large fires, more than a small town can reasonably handle.
