Told from several different points of view this is a not just a story of a survivor of the French Revolution, but a tale of survival. Isabella is used and abused by her family while she takes shelter in their home. And it seems like her luck is only bad as she tries every avenue to find a way to make a decent life for herself and her much loved daughter. But the legacy of Nethergate doesn't leave them alone until they find themselves in the grasp of the house once more. This is one of Norah Lofts best novels and a real page turner.
